Mott has been writing songs since early childhood. Singing along to his favorite artist, The Monkeys, America, and Sinatra, Mott would make up his own lyrics to many of the hits by those artists. But Mott had a family and needed a steady paycheck. He became a successful advertising executive specializing in the fields of music and automotive. Until one day in 2014, a musician client reached out to see if Mott had any lyrical ideas for a Christmas song. He did!

William Dell's soulful voice brings back echoes of Motown and Memphis. The high tenor of Frank Czuri is incomparable, yet it blends seamlessly with other voices in close harmony. In 1997, Lionel De Leon formed Messenger Project and began recording the music with the band (who also contributed songs). Messenger Project became a non-profit in 2000 and dissolved in 2009 when Lionel relocated to New Mexico. All of the songs are available free in wav format from Lionel's YouTube channel. In 2025, Lionel released all of the recordings to every streaming and download platform. Lionel also wrote a rock opera for cinema ("On This Rock") and a musical for stage ("The Empty Noose")
